# UI/UX Design Skills Test and Verified Score

> A UI/UX design skills test on accessibility, hierarchy and interaction, plus live usability critique and connected Figma files. Prove your design skills.

Most UI/UX portfolios look good and say little about usability. Lemma captures how you spot friction, fix hierarchy and design for accessibility, in sessions and assessments built around real interfaces.

How UI/UX design is assessed

## What UI/UX design competence looks like

Good UI/UX designers see what a user will trip over before anyone tests it. They notice a primary action that looks secondary, a form that hides its errors, or a contrast ratio that fails people with low vision. Their fixes are specific: change the hierarchy, merge two steps, rewrite a label.

They also design for consistency. Spacing, type and components follow a system, so every new screen feels familiar. They test early with rough prototypes, read the results without defending their first idea, and know the basics of accessibility well enough to build it in rather than patch it later.

### Visual hierarchy

Using size, weight, colour and spacing so the most important action on a screen is obvious at a glance.

### Accessibility

Contrast, focus order, touch targets, readable labels and screen reader behaviour designed in from the start.

### Usability testing

Running lightweight tests, writing neutral tasks and turning observations into concrete design changes.

### Forms and input design

Clear labels, inline validation, sensible defaults and error messages that tell people how to recover.

### Information architecture

Navigation, labelling and grouping that match how people think about the content, not the org chart.

### Design systems

Applying and extending shared components and tokens so interfaces stay consistent as a product grows.

## What counts as evidence of UI/UX design skills?

A portfolio shows the final screens, not the decisions behind them. For UI/UX design, Lemma records sessions where someone saw you reason through a critique, an adaptive test and Figma files linked from your account. Here is what each source contributes. See the [evidence methodology](https://getlemma.io/methodology#evidence-types) for how each source is weighed.

### A live usability teardown

In a session, review an interface with a practitioner and explain what you would change and why. Spotting the real problem quickly and proposing a precise fix is what the rating reflects.

### A file with states and accessible specs

Attach a Figma file that includes focus, error and empty states, plus contrast and spacing decisions. Lemma confirms your account can access it and re-checks over time.

[Adaptive assessment](https://getlemma.io/product/assessments)

### Scenario questions on usability calls

The adaptive assessment describes realistic interface problems, such as a checkout with rising drop-off, and asks which change best addresses the cause.

[AI tutor practice](https://getlemma.io/product/ai-tutor)

### Practice on accessibility rules

The AI tutor drills topics like contrast, focus order and form labelling. It helps you prepare, and it adds only a small, capped amount to the practice part of your score.

## How is a UI/UX design skills test run on Lemma?

The UI/UX design test runs 15 to 25 scenario questions and adapts to your answers, testing how you would act on research, constraints and edge cases. It sits next to critique sessions and linked files in your UI/UX design SCI, which counts recent work for more.

1. ### Critique a live interface

Book a session with a UI/UX practitioner and walk through an interface together, yours or a public one. They rate how clearly you identify usability issues and how specific your proposed fixes are.

2. ### Connect files that show the details

Attach Figma files where states, accessibility notes and component usage are visible. A reviewer can see that you design for edge cases, not just the ideal path.

3. ### Pass the adaptive UI/UX assessment

Scenario questions cover hierarchy, accessibility, forms and navigation. Difficulty adjusts after every answer, and per-question time limits keep the focus on judgement you already have.

## UI/UX design skills: common questions

### What should a UX design portfolio show to get interviews?

Show the problem, what you learned from users and how the design changed because of it. Include before and after states, edge cases and at least one accessibility decision. Reviewers skim, so lead each case with the outcome and your specific contribution, then the process behind it.

### How do I prove I understand accessibility in design?

Talk through accessibility decisions in a live session: contrast choices, focus order, label wording and touch target sizing. Attach a Figma file where those decisions are documented. On Lemma, both become evidence on your UI/UX record, and scenario questions in the assessment test the same judgement.

### Is a UX certificate enough to get hired?

A certificate shows you finished a structured course, which is a reasonable start. Hiring teams still want to see how you work on real interfaces. Live critique sessions, connected design files and an adaptive assessment give them that view, and you choose what goes on your Passport.

### How does a live UI/UX session work on Lemma?

You meet a practitioner in a one-to-one video session in your browser. Most sessions centre on a real interface: you critique it, sketch a fix or walk through your own file. Afterwards you both rate the session, and that rating becomes evidence on your UI/UX record.
